On Saturday, April 14th, the sounds of classic Detroit Soul and Motown come to 20 Front Street in Lake Orion. Drew Schultz is a songwriter, drummer, percussionist, producer, and educator who has worked with legendary artists including the Temptations, Four Tops, Aretha Franklin, Martha Reeves & The Vandellas, the Miracles, Contours, Dramatics, Funk Brothers, Maurice White of Earth Wind & Fire, and many more. As a Pre-Production Engineer for Universal Motown Records, Drew has credits on multiple releases by the Jackson 5, David Ruffin & Jimmy Ruffin, and the Cellarful of Motown Series. Half of the money made from Drew’s “Back To Class” series of recordings raise money for the music programs of the Detroit Public Schools, consisting of his original compositions with featured artists including the Four Tops, Funk Brothers, Melvin Davis, Spyder Turner, Pat Lewis, Reggie Torian of The Impressions, Carolyn Crawford, Joe “Pep” Harris, Dennis Coffey and many more.
This one-of-a-kind event coming to 20 Front Street will include a mix of the songs that Drew has written for legendary soul and Motown artists, combined with performances of the hits that made them famous. The event will be interspersed with stories about the history of Detroit Soul and Motown, and Drew’s own stories of touring, recording, writing, and working with these legendary artists. Drew’s band, The Broken Habits, consists of some of the most accomplished musicians in the Metro Detroit area including Carlton Washington (Guitar), Matt Ryan (Bass), Mike Harrison (Keys), and Trish Shandor (Vocals). This event will be recorded and released as a live EP by Drew Schultz & The Broken Habits. In addition to witnessing the live recording, the audience will get to watch in real time as Drew composes a soulful new song, produces a scratch demo of it, and performs it on stage as a part of the show for the first time. After the show, a short Q&A session with Drew will be held in the 20 Front Street cafe.
